Keffarah is the technical term for freeing slaves as expiation for violating religious rules while fasting. When Christian slaves were freed, it was naturally understood and accorded with the Sunnah—that is, custom and practice—to pay the freed slaves’ journey home and provide them with a small amount of start-up capital for a business.
